Sharing Distance Learning Opportunities

These are a few questions spinning about after listening to discussion around the removal of TSL services by the Ministry of Learning:

1. Are we strengthening learning opportunities within our divisions if we are dependent on services offered beyond our regions?
2. Do school divisions need to assume more responsibility for accommodating learning needs that cannot be met through traditional classroom settings?

There appears to be a contiuum of developmental stages throughout Saskatchewan school divisions with respect to distance learning initiatives. Some areas have developed interesting dynamic solutions in response to learning needs in their communities. Some divisions are at an entry level, while others are easily accomodating all requests. Building capacity doesn't have to be a huge leap. Every division has access to server space, LMS systems, IT support and can easily purchase synchronous tools as needed. None of this is rocket science. Let's support one another.
The trick appears to be allocation of instructional staff, support and resources. Recruit exciting people who are able to communicate using conventional tools,( ie the Internet). "Purchasing" distance learning services seems an odd way to allocate resources within a division.
